Frequently asked questions about starting to work

Working in a support and educational role
How will this affect my benefits?
This will depend on which, if any, benefits you receive, how much work you do and sometimes where you do it. In all cases we will put you in touch with benefit advisors to have a benefit calculations check so that you know how working could affect you.
How much must I work for?
How much must I spend?
What will I be doing?
You decide how long you can spend and the sort of thing you would like to do. Sometimes your benefits may allow practice working. In all cases we will talk with you and help you choose and make a personal action plan to get into work, taking into account your personal circumstances, your skills and interests, the time you have to spend and working around any difficulties you feel you have.
I have not worked for a long time, what if I can't do it anymore?
We will help you to get back into working by looking with you at the things you feel you can do as well as looking at the areas you are concerned about. Maybe some new skills training will help, or some work experience to start you off. We also have a review process to support you and the employer in the early stages of that new working experience. How much and how often is set individually with the employer and yourself. It is a good experience finding out how well you are doing.
What will happen when I go on holiday?
As with all work, you will need to book time off for holidays in plenty of time so that you can be organisedin your absence. Holiday times will be arranged when work is begun.
What if I don't like it?
We will be supporting you in your work. If you use your skills and interests to choose your job, you should be doing the things you enjoy, and feel you do well. If there is a problem with other things such as in the workplace itself we will use our system of reviews to support you.
How can it help me?
People have commented about how working has helped stop feelings of isolation, with proving your own self worth, extending and learning new skills, raising awareness of other areas of work, opening up opportunities as well as becoming independent.
